How to best plan your house move from packing to the big day

Moving house can involve a great deal of hard work, but there are steps that you can take to make the process much less stressful. If you do have a house move planned and want to keep problems to a minimum, read these tips on planning it effectively.

Get rid of clutter

Decluttering your home is a great way to get the process underway. Now is the perfect time to think about disposing of or giving away items that you no longer need. Take a look around your home to identify things that you don’t think you’ll be using again. You may have more clutter than you think, so check your loft, garden and storage cupboards. You may have amassed a wealth of items you no longer require over the years.

Check measurements at your new home

If you know the dimensions of your next home, you’ll be able to work out if you can accommodate your current furniture. Taking a look around the property beforehand will make this even easier. If there is something that won’t fit, consider selling or donating it to someone.

Look for a removals company if you need one

We can definitely help you with this as we are a Hull based removals working in Hull, Humberside and the surrounding areas. Most people do require help from outside when they’re moving the contents of their homes from A to B. Removals companies can help you get your goods moved safely and efficiently. It’s a good idea to get quotes from at least three local firms, and to speak to their former customers if this is possible.

Separate your valuables and fragile items from the rest

You should be able to place most of your goods in boxes, but you may also have breakable or high-value items that require extra care. Use additional packaging or bubblewrap to ensure these are protected sufficiently. If you have a car, it may be best to transport them this way rather than putting them in the van.

Get the packing process underway

The next step to take is to start packing everything else. Purchase high-quality packing materials including strong boxes and bubble wrap. Avoid overpacking boxes or putting too many heavy items in the same box. Write details about the contents on each box to make the unpacking process easier. Some removals companies can pack on your behalf to make things easier for you.

Tell all the relevant organisations that you’re moving

You will need to inform your utility providers that you are moving home. Your bank, insurers and healthcare providers will also need to be aware of this. You can also have your mail redirected to your new address so you don’t miss any essential correspondence.

By taking the steps above, you can make moving home a much less stressful process. If your move is now just a few weeks away, it’s best to get the wheels in motion as quickly as you can. The more time you allow for preparation, the smoother the big day itself should be.
